Kids’ Tooth Decay SOS # 7 For Parents and Educators
Campbelltown, South Australia (EXPERTCLICK) May 14, 2012 – Dr. Garth Pettit, Oral Health Care Educator, Author of Kindle eBook, How Do I Look After My Kids Teeth? 5 of 12. Kids’ Tooth Decay SOS # 7.
Kids’ Tooth Decay SOS # 7: “16 month old, 4 cavities, 2 stressed parents”. Anonymous.
Prevention of the common oral diseases tooth decay, gum diseases, bad breath and stained teeth is simple if parents and educators know what oral hygiene instruction and what oral health care education to give to teach their children. The dental profession’s advice to prevent oral diseases, since the invention in the year 1498 of the first bristle toothbrush, has been “Brush Your Teeth”. Children’s oral health care education, if at all, has been based on that advice; “Brush Your Teeth”. It has never changed! It is now timely for a change. “Brush Your Teeth” is a misleading oral hygiene instruction. Many people, taking it literally and simply brushing only teeth, are candidates for dental treatment throughout their lifetimes.
“That this instruction “Brush Your Teeth” has not succeeded in the prevention of oral diseases in children (and in adults!) is evidenced by the sheer, and ever- increasing, demand for treatment of all common oral diseases: both by children and by adults” says Author. Dr. Garth Pettit advises parents and educators, in Kindle eBook, How Do I Look After My Kids Teeth? 5 of 12, to instruct children to “Treat Your Whole Mouth” or better still for children, “Paint Your Mouth” and to provide children with an oral health education based on that instruction. The Author recommends reading this recent review of this eBook.

Learn GarGar The Dentist’s Oral Health Lesson 5
“LURKEEZ and NASTEEZ”

“The topic here is “lurkeez and nasteez” and this lesson provides details on how the composition of plaque is changed by bacteria breaking down complex chemical compounds into possibly harmful substances.
If this sounds too complex for a child, keep in mind the always-child-friendly format of GarGar The Dentist, which uses a blend of fanciful, now-familiar cartoon animal drawings and clear chatty text to teach even the most complex of dental concepts.
Kids learn that ‘lurkeez’ live naturally inside the mouth and that lurkeez bacteria in plaque are the big problem. Plaque lurkeez are unaffected by healthy saliva washes and can build up quickly after every meal, leading to the development of nasty Stix (already presented in a prior lesson) a bad situation indeed.
The focus on explaining lurkeez and nasteez is reinforced by color drawings explaining their process, then accompanied by the sections inviting kids to color their own understanding of the process, a quiz section, and reinforcing questions on GarGar’s entire ‘painting the mouth’ process.
Again: stamps, a Certificate of Achievement, and ‘lifetime tips’ reinforce past and present lessons and provide a unified focus.
The translations offered in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese as well as the original English offer a worldwide opportunity for GarGar’s dental health message to get through to the young.”
