Kids’ Tooth Decay SOS # 9 For Parents and Educators
Campbelltown, South Australia (EXPERTCLICK) May 17, 2012 – Dr. Garth Pettit, Oral Health Care Educator, Author of Kindle eBook, How Do I Look After My Kids Teeth? 7 of 12. Kids’ Tooth Decay SOS # 9.
Kids’ Tooth Decay SOS # 9: “”Tooth decay is a contagious disease spread from person to person–in your case, most likely from you and your husband to your child. All adults who come into close contact with the child need to floss and use Squigle Enamel Saver at least twice a day, to eradicate their infection.” Anonymous.
Prevention of the common oral diseases tooth decay, gum diseases, bad breath and stained teeth is simple if parents and educators know what oral hygiene instruction and what oral health care education to give to teach their children. The dental profession’s advice to prevent oral diseases, since the invention in the year 1498 of the first bristle toothbrush, has been “Brush Your Teeth”. Children’s oral health care education, if at all, has been based on that advice; “Brush Your Teeth”. It has never changed!
It is now timely for a change. “Brush Your Teeth” is a misleading oral hygiene instruction. Many people, taking it literally and simply brushing only teeth, are candidates for dental treatment throughout their lifetimes. Children especially take instructions literally thus are more prone to misinterpret the instruction “Brush Your Teeth”.
“That this instruction “Brush Your Teeth” has not succeeded in the prevention of oral diseases in children (and in adults!) is evidenced by the sheer, and ever- increasing, demand for treatment of all common oral diseases: both by children and by adults” says Author. Dr. Garth Pettit advises parents and educators, in Kindle eBook, How Do I Look After My Kids Teeth? 7 of 12, to instruct children to “Treat Your Whole Mouth” or better still for children, “Paint Your Mouth” and to provide children with an oral health education based on that instruction. “Lesson 7 reinforces the concepts in Lesson 6 with a more specific focus, “A Plaque Attack On Teeth and Tongue”.
Here kids learn how tooth decay develops and also how plaque affects the tongue, and is the last discussion of the nasty things that can build up due to poor dental hygiene.
This reinforces why the doctor’s ‘paint your mouth’ process is much more important than just brushing teeth alone, and provides a cartoon drawing paired with clear identification of different parts of a tooth. Enamel, dentine, pulp, nerves and roots are all discussed using the simple drawing and discussions revolve around both a healthy tooth and what happens when plaque and decay build up and attack the tooth.
Tooth stains and tongue health are also covered in this lesson, which also include more advanced discussion of pits and fissures in the tooth enamel.
Visit 9 exercises encourage several sets of drawings and provide reinforcing concepts for painting the mouth and for the concepts provided in this lesson plan.
Translations offered in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese continue to provide easy lessons for foreign language speakers.
Reinforcing the prior lesson that lurkeez and nasteez are bad for your gums and gingivae, this lesson shows exactly how they work to build plaque, discussing all the evidence of buildup and identifying the gingival sulcus as an area where plaque and scale is most likely to build up and cause lasting problems.
Color drawings of healthy teeth and unhealthy teeth affected by plaque build-up show the progression of decay and emphasize that kids have a positive role in making sure this doesn’t happen.
No drawings at the end of this lesson: kids are provided with pictures of a plastic mouth model and invited to do their own mouth explorations to identify different parts.
In the ‘Question Time’ portion kids are invited to draw as well as to answer the reinforcing quizzes on concepts, making for a diverse and fun lesson.
The usual concluding stamps, awards and cartoon interactions reinforce the ideas in this lesson plan, while the translations offered in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese continue to provide easy lessons for foreign language speakers.”
